More than a commitment.

Sustainability is not an afterthought. For us, it is part of our ethos, and it is embedded in the foundations of our mission and the way we operate. That is why we have chosen to collaborate with local craftsmen and women to provide you, on a number of sustainable initiatives, which we use throughout our Zanzibar Resort.

A small skincare collection with a big impact.

Mwani Zanzibar crafts macroalgae and plant-based skincare, in nutrient-rich micro-batches, by the Mamas of Zanzibar. People Mwani Zanzibar’s team are locals from Zanzibar, and come from different walks of life. They support each other and work to empower and enhance other local communities, as well as their environment. 67% of managers are women and over 80% of staff are seaweed farmers turned artisans.

Mwani Zanzibar is a socially, environmentally, and ethically (S.E.E.) committed clean beauty brand with substance. They aim to become one of the first premium skincare companies that is operated and run by the very people it aims to impact.

Our guests will find Mwani’s soaps in their rooms, in our retail section and in public areas.

Turning waste into art

Chako invites craft workers to the workshop where they become familiar with the meaning of upcycling, learn about target groups and the various products existing in the marketplace. Through co-creative design thinking workshops, artisan craft workers in Zanzibar are stimulated and encouraged to independently create upcycled, hip products. This stimulates social and economic empowerment whilst promoting sustainability.

By collaborating with different partners on the island, a bigger platform is created for artisan craft producers in Zanzibar using waste material. Through awareness campaigns, local Zanzibari are encouraged to create up-cycled products as well.

Chako collects empty bottles and plastic at hotels, resorts, restaurants and dumping places. So the concept of recycling is íntroduced in the day-to-day life for local Zanzibari.
